Great Early Mother's Day Gift

Mother's Day is only a little more than a week away. After leading the launch of a brand new preschool (newcovenantpreschool.com) leading our church's children's ministry and keeping up with me my wonderful wife is literally exhausted. So God gave me the idea to give her a real night of peace, no not what you're thinking.

I took my 3 boys to a local hotel after school and have had them all night and will have them most of the day tomorrow. We'd had a ball. My middle son picked dinner (Waffle House) and my other boys each got a chance to pick something fun to do. We've dipped in the pool and even soaked in the hot tub, although the youngest didn't like that so much. Right now I'm looking at all three of them, and they're knocked out.

The wifey is at home catching up on her shows and really enjoying a Friday night of rest. Most Fridays the 5 of us have pizza and movie; then early bed for the boys and quiet time for the two of us. Besides getting some great quality time with my boys, my wife is getting to really chill. Hey folks, give mom the gift of rest. Take some time to take on some extra duty, run some errands or just relieve some stressor in her life. Better than flowers, shopping and even jewelry, the hard working and deep loving mom will really appreciate the break. Give it a try....

Ministry's Full Circle

Today I had one of those surreal experiences. Just over 20 years ago I was ordained as a minister of the Gospel. I was wide eyed and idealistic. I had ideas of changing the world for the Glory of God. I envisioned changing my neighborhood, city and world. Nearly 3 years ago I accepted an invitation to pastor a church in my hometown in the neighborhood in which I grew up. Coming back home after 15 years away brought a lot of trepidations. God has been so richly blessing!! The church is growing, new ministry is emerging and we've even opened a new preschool. I've seen old relationships with family members rekindled and healed. But today I saw ministry come full circle.

Today I needed to grab a few things (making dinner for the family) so I went to a brand new Food Lion grocery store, it just opened a couple of weeks ago. The store was very nice, open and a great addition to the neighborhood. All of the employees were kind and professional. It's a really inviting store and I plan to frequent it. Here's the hook.

As I walked out of the store I looked across the parking lot and adjacent to the lot was the church in which I was first ordained. Yes, I knew this new store was an outreach ministry of that church. Yes I knew it was a great vision come to fruition. Yes I knew it was model partnership between a church and corporation. But all of a sudden it hit me, 'My continued vision for ministry has always been community based ministry where lives were changed and resources marshaled for the greater good.' My passion for ministry began there and now being realized there in that ministry and mine which is just a few blocks away. And right there today I stood in one of the most poignant examples of this type of ministry, birthed in the hearts and minds of the church where I was first ordained. I celebrate the Dr. Foster, Bob James, the St. Philip membership and the Food Lion folks; great job.

Hey Savannah, don't sleep on the new Food Lion - it's pretty good and a great asset for our neighborhood. Take it from someone who grew up in the area, it beats the corner store we were use to. Where have you seen you life come full circle? Be encouraged.
